Mu Sigma Interview Experience
I applied for the position of a Trainee Decision Scientist at Mu Sigma online, through my college’s Training and Placement Cell. I received a call from the HR on the very next day confirming that I could sit for the placement as I met all the academic criteria. The interview process comprised of a written test followed by a face-to-face interview with the senior manager & one more panelist. The questions asked were pretty easy and spanned through common HR interview questions like “Tell me about yourself“, “Where do you see yourself 3 years from now?” and “Why Mu Sigma?” etc. I spoke about my internship experience only when I felt I should. I was also given some decently tough business cases and puzzles to solve. The entire face-to-face interview lasted for a good 1 hour. My interview took place at VIT, Pune and I faired well in the test. However I did not get selected as the filtration criteria was tough to crack, considering the number of students who were appearing for Mu Sigma placement test. I could have asked a senior to refer me directly, however I did not and now I am repenting. 🙁 Let’s deep dive into my entire interview process.
About Mu Sigma
Mu Sigma, founded by Dhiraj C Rajaram, is a management consulting firm which deals in data analytics solutions. Today, this company is into business intelligence solutions that service firms of all sizes and despite being an Indian company, Mu Sigma works with over 140 Fortune 500 companies. Clients include the likes of Uber and their headquarters are situated in Bangalore, India.
Did you notice the name of the company? Does it ring a bell? Ok let me tell you. The firm’s name is very interesting as it has been derived from the statistical terms “Mu (μ)” which symbolizes mean and “Sigma (σ)” which symbolizes standard deviation, of a probability distribution. 🙂

My Mu Sigma interview in detail
I faced 2 rounds of interview namely written aptitude test and an HR-cum-Technical Case Studies round with Manger. Before the interview process began, we had an induction where we had a “video synthesis” round consisting of the CEO speaking about Mu Sigma’s values and competencies.
Since I had applied through my college’s on-campus recruitment window, I was required to submit my latest resume on the spot once again. Thereafter I attended an online aptitude test. This was very basic in nature and I guess anyone with a knack to solve problems can crack it.
As I moved on to my in-person interview, I realized it not only consisted of case studies, but also tricky behavioral interview questions. The interview panel literally grilled into my resume. They were particularly curious about my training and project work, and asked me a lot of questions about how I handled my project. The case/brainteaser section which came up later was fun and I thoroughly enjoyed it. In my first case interview question, the interviewer shared an almost realistic case with me. I was then asked to share a solution in 15 minutes. There were 2 people in the interview panel and one of them was a Senior manager. I was also asked other questions like, “How much milk is sold in India everyday?” and “How much toll is collected on DND flyover in Delhi everyday?” I tried to come up with realistic numbers and backed them with calculations. Later they asked me some more entirely hypothetical case questions like “How would you quantifying the success of a mail campaign for a large private sector bank?” which actually took me aback as I did not have realistic data to work with. Probably they sensed my hesitation at this point. They wanted to test the way I think, or approach the problems as concluding with a real number was not possible. The last questions was “What do you know about Mu Sigma?” and I answered it as confidently as I could, but I think they could sense that I was nervous.
Hope my experiences will help you prepare better. All the best for your Mu Sigma interview test or any other interview lined up.
