I ensures to update my fresher resume for Electronics Engineering jobs for my HAL interview well in advance. I made sure to add all the relevant details and skills. I also tried to kept it as minimal & truthful as possible to avoid clutter and confusion during my face-to-face discussion.
Hindustan aeronautics limited interview
I faced a lot of Aerospace interview questions. Please note that there are many types of aeronautical engineers. First are the lot of aeronautical engineers who work with aircrafts that stay in earth’s atmosphere such as airplanes and helicopters. The second lot of aeronautical engineers work with aircrafts that operate outside earth’s atmosphere such as rockets and satellites. The second lot is comprised of mechanical aeronautical engineers, electrical aeronautical engineers, automobile aeronautical engineers, stress engineers, mechanical design engineers, service engineers, process engineers, software developers, hardware design engineers, project analysts and manufacturing engineers. I was interviewed for a position in the second lot of engineers.
HAL Question Paper
My HAL question paper was pretty easy. I solved aptitude and logical reasoning sections comfortably as I had practiced a lot of questions with my friends before hand. The paper had a technical test, an aptitude test and an English test. This was followed by a group discussion round and a personal face-to-face HR interview.
HAL Technical round
My test was of about 2 hours and I solved a total of 150+ questions. Some questions I faced in my technical interview round are below:
Q. What are the different types of communications?
Analog and Digital. My final electronics project had to interact with the real, analog world in some way, but most of the microprocessors, computers, and logic units we see today are pure play digital components. Video and audio transmissions are often transferred or recorded using analog signals. Digital signals must have a finite set of possible values. Both these signals pass between devices in order to send and receive information, which might be video, audio, or some sort of encoded data. Usually analog and digital signals are transmitted through wires, or through the air via radio frequency (RF) waves. Also, not all audio and video signals are analog. Standardized signals like HDMI for video (and audio) and MIDI, I2S, or AC’97 for audio are digitally transmitted.

Q. What is cut-off frequency?
The frequency at which the response is -3dB with respect to the maximum response.
Q. What is your understanding of RF or Radio Frequency?
Radio frequency (RF) is a frequency or rate of oscillation within the range of about 3 Hz to 300 GHz. This range corresponds to frequency of alternating current electrical signals used to produce and detect radio waves. Since most of this range is beyond the vibration rate that most mechanical systems can respond to, RF usually refers to oscillations in electrical circuits or electromagnetic radiation.
Q. What are the three tactical elements of electronic warfare?
Answer: An Electronic warfare has three main elements namely:
ES – Electronic support with a high passive acquisition intelligence about friend and foe
EA – Electronic attack with passive and active denial of RF spectrum
EP – Electronic protection to protect friendly personnel and assets by active and passive techniques.
Q. What are the main areas in aviation?
Answer: Artificial intelligence, Aircrafts and parts, Advanced materials, composites and specialty metals, Computers, electronic components, and systems, Fighters and attack aircraft, Lasers, Navigation controls and guidance systems, Ordinance and Military vehicles, Aviation electronic/Avionics, Robotics, Satellites etc.
Q. Differentiate Aeronautical Engineering from Astronautical Engineering?
Answer: Aeronautical engineering is a field of developing vehicles & instruments that operates in the Earth’s atmosphere like airplanes and choppers. Astronautical engineering deals in instruments and vehicles operating in space. It includes overseeing the entire process for developing aircraft and aerospace products (like rockets, missiles, communication satellites etc) as well as power systems for spacecraft structure, spacecraft communication systems for distant space probes, space launchers, space vehicles, direct broadcasting satellites, space navigational systems, reconnaissance satellites, hardware design for operations in spacecraft, designing and testing robotic systems, developing propulsion systems and computing optimum flight.
HAL HR round
I faced easy interview questions in my HR round at HAL. These questions are pretty common in any campus placement drive in India. So you can come prepared with common HR interview questions and you would be able to easily crack this round.
Q. Tell me about yourself.
In the answer, I tried to summarize my background and academics. A part of my answer to this HR interview question sounded more or less like this:
“I am Praveen and I hail from Nandini layout. I completed my Bachelor of Engineering in ECE or Electronics and Communication Engineering from Don Bosco Institute of Technology, Bangalore. Alongside my degree, I have also completed an internship from ITI limited in Electronics to gain real world hands-on experience. My hobbies include reading books and playing cricket.”
Q. How Would You Handle If Your Co-worker Were Not Cooperating With You?
Answer: I will challenge starting assumptions about my coworker and not work on perceptions or preconceived notions. I will use a few simple techniques for a healthier, peaceful and effective interaction. I will escalate my issues right way, and also at the right time to my authorities in case I sense something disturbing.
Q. What do you know about our company HAL India?
In the answer, I spoke all about Hindustan Aeronautics Limited that I knew from my research that I had done the night before. My answer was like this.
“HAL is an Indian state-owned aerospace and defense company. It is based out of Bangalore, Karnataka and also has several facilities all over India; hence it is under the purview of the Indian Ministry of Defense. HAL being a government-owned corporation is majorly into aerospace industry related operations such as manufacturing and assembly of aircraft, navigation and related communication equipment, which are critical for airports operation. HAL further specializes in the design, fabrication and assembly of aircraft, jet engines, helicopters and their spare parts. Till date, Hindustan Aeronautics has collaborated with multiple renowned international and domestic aerospace agencies namely Airbus, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Sukhoi Aviation Corporation, and Elbit Systems. R Madhavan is currently the Chairman and Managing Director of HAL and he only recently replaced T. Suvarna Raju.”
Q. Why do you want to work for us?
I got a little nervous while answering this questions as I am an ECE student and this was an aeronautics company. I believe my HAL interviewer wanted to know what my area of interest was and how I could evolve into a skilled aerospace engineer in the future while building my career within their company. So I justified why I chose to sit for HAL over all other regular mass recruiters. I assured the interviewer with my answer that I was truly looking forward to a long-term career with that company and looks like they believed me and hence I was offered the job.
HAL Interview Tips
If you are keen about a Government job in Electronics Engineering, please prepare well for your Hindustan aeronautics limited interview. Some handy tips to help you crack the interview are:
